I wasn't going to pay money to see this in the theater, but I figure this movie's a good choice to restart my Bad Movie Watching project.

Maybe it's because I don't have the childhood attachment to this story, but for me, this movie was pretty much unwatchable. All the characters are unsympathetic -- I know they're supposed to be -- but after an hour of watching the boy and the monsters run around without any point, I had to say uncle and turn it off.

Nicholas Cage, like RDJ and Adam Sandler, is among those actors who really don't seem to act anymore. They essentially play themselves and the filmmakers just have to mold the film around their known persona.

Why must movies continue to depict individuals with psychic/super powers to be such sullen folks? I love the premise of this movie, I love the fact that it's primarily set in Hong Kong in all its dirty splendor, but the characters are all so boring. Answer me this, comic fans: are they thinking of doing other X-Men origins movies other than Wolverine's? 'Cause I checked IMDB and there's supposedly a sequel to this one in '11. I guess Hugh Jackman needs to remain relevant after that Australia movie, right ( Read more... )
